Maplewood’s Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Maplewood’s Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Maplewood, Minnesota, is actively implementing initiatives to enhance environmental sustainability and combat climate change. The city’s comprehensive approach includes climate adaptation and mitigation plans, stormwater management strategies, and community engagement programs.

Climate Adaptation and Mitigation

Recognizing the challenges posed by climate change, Maplewood has developed a Climate Adaptation Plan aimed at increasing the city’s resilience to climate impacts. This plan focuses on sustainable land and water use, waste reduction, and promoting equity and livability within the community.

In addition, the city has drafted a Climate Mitigation Plan to guide actions in reducing greenhouse gas emissions both in municipal operations and community-wide. This plan builds upon previous sustainability efforts, including the 2021 Climate Adaptation Plan, and sets forth detailed actions to meet emission reduction goals.

Stormwater Management

Effective stormwater management is crucial for protecting Maplewood’s lakes and streams. The city has implemented a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan addressing key areas such as construction site runoff control, illicit discharge detection, and public education. Residents are encouraged to participate by managing lawn clippings and reducing the use of phosphorus-containing fertilizers to prevent water pollution.

Community Engagement and Recognition

Maplewood’s Environmental and Natural Resources Commission, comprising seven residents appointed by the City Council, plays a pivotal role in guiding environmental policy. The commission focuses on establishing environmental priorities, recommending new policies, and promoting environmental awareness through educational programs.

The city’s dedication to sustainability has been recognized through its participation in the GreenStep Cities program since 2010. This voluntary program assists cities in achieving sustainability and quality-of-life goals by implementing best practices that focus on cost savings, energy use reduction, resource conservation, and climate adaptation.

Through these comprehensive efforts, Maplewood continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental stewardship and the well-being of its residents.
